Well, this week I posted this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Well, here it is as I got it.

Kinja'd!!!

The tiller is rusty, but that’s honestly the worst part. It’s not seized, everything is solid, it appears to have all the parts and it looks like I got the model with the early water pump (which is the reliable one). So far, so good.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

This is as far as I’ve got at this point. Tank and fuel lines removed and drained. Yes, that stuff in the water bottle is the old gas. This is where I’m going to direct my attention for the time being—cleaning the crap out of the tank, carb and fuel lines. Anyone know the best way to get rid of old gummed up gas/oil mix?

trick I learned from road kill.

fire it up, rev it up, cover the intake. created vacuum will draw out all of the old gunk and what not

The thing is, cleaning the fuel system happens to be one of the conditions to getting it running. After sitting in there for who knows how long the carb definitely needs a bath in carb cleaner. That would probably work for the lines, too, but the last thing I want to do after that is suck more crap out of the tank.

Geez, how old is that gas in there?! If the engine is that old, this would have taken leaded gas, no? I'd love to have a little project to tinker on. I ALMOST had a riding lawnmower to tinker on this week as a down the street neighbor left it for the trash. I literally couldn't move the damn thing though, or else it would have been in my garage right now.

No idea.

It probably was designed for leaded. Don’t know (first hand) how it’ll react to unleaded+2 stroke oil, but apparently it’ll work.

ouch that sucks, had to’ve been something wrong with it’s trans. I pop mine in neutral and push it all over the place when needed. It also has a handy push bar on the front of it, makes a great handle to lift it with haha.

I’d disassemble the carb as much as possible and just hose it down with carb cleaner.

That’s the plan for the carb. The lines, I was going to blow out with an air hose and then soak them in carb cleaner as well. The tank though?

Yeah, that was my guess. It wasn't a great thing, but it could have been nice to have something to tinker with. I do know that it was recalled, but that's pretty much all the info I could find out about it.

Man I’m glad I didn’t get one of those, it’s actually what I was looking for because it would’ve been fine for my yard. I ended up with a Craftsman lawn tractor with a 42" cut.

My stepdad has one very similar to yours. He's had good success with it, and he runs over all kinds of sticks and shit with it. Yeah, he has to replace the blade every couple of years, but that's kind of to be expected when you abuse it.

I wouldn’t soak the fuel lines in carb cleaner. Carb cleaner is not nice to rubber bits, you can spray it down but don’t let carb cleaner sit in the lines

Haha, I’ve got an extra set of blades so I can rotate out if needed for sharpening/etc.

I bought it off craigslist with accessories for 500 bucks. Found out that it actually had a completely split axle

It’s all better now though. Fired it up for the first time this year last weekend and it worked like a charm.

Any rubber bits should just be replaced. All metal bits can be bathed in carb cleaner.

I think you’ll need to do more than that if you want to turn that trailer into a boat...

The lines here are actually copper. If they were rubber I’d just replace them.

Holy hell. How do you split an axle on a lawn tractor? Was this formerly owned by Vin Diesel or something?

hahaha, I hear it’s actually a common problem on these.

Mine is also from the 90's so it’s been in use a while. The original axle has one welded seam and the replacement has 2

Kinja'd!!!

I was able to get the full replacement/ready to go axle off amazon for like 60 something bucks.

Pfft... there’s no way you’ll get it to float, let alone move with that motor.

Cool find

For the tank do you know of anyone/shop with a parts cleaner. Most radiator repair shops have large heated cleaners to steam clean the gunk out. Did that for the 914 that had varnish at the bottom.

As for the gas, most dumps have a fuel/oil disposal.

Unfortunately I don’t... But that doesn’t mean I couldn’t look one up somewhere.

I’ll look into that one, thanks.
